Bamboo Theatre has celebrated its 16th anniversary, reinforcing its commitment to using the performing arts as a tool for social reform and youth empowerment across Nigeria.
Founder Sylvia Ojei highlighted the group’s enduring mission to confront pressing societal issues through contemporary stage productions. According to her, theatre remains a powerful medium for sparking dialogue around challenges such as corruption, gender inequality, substance abuse, and youth disenfranchisement.
Over the years, Bamboo Theatre has built a reputation for producing thought-provoking plays that resonate with everyday Nigerians, particularly young audiences. By blending storytelling with advocacy, the organisation aims to not only entertain but also educate and inspire behavioral change.
Ojei noted that the theatre’s outreach initiatives have expanded beyond traditional stage performances to include workshops, school engagements, and community-based programs. These efforts are designed to equip young people with creative skills while encouraging critical thinking about societal values.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with complex social issues, Bamboo Theatre’s milestone underscores the growing relevance of the arts in shaping public consciousness. The anniversary celebration also served as a call for greater support from both the public and private sectors to sustain creative platforms that drive positive change.
