Union Bank of Nigeria has been certified under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) version 4.0.1, effective from 11 August 2026.

PCI DSS sets a baseline of technical and operational requirements for environments where payment card account data is stored, processed or transmitted. The certification confirms that Union Bank met those requirements across a broad scope of operations included in the assessment.

Covered areas included network infrastructure, card issuance, ATM and POS transaction acquiring and payment processing, reconciliation, settlement, chargeback and dispute resolution, and retail banking. The bank was assessed and certified in the Service Provider category.

The certification followed a sustained engagement lasting about a year, which incorporated quarterly assessments and involved departmental, business and functional heads across the bank.

The assessment process included collaboration with the security firm Digital Encode, and the final independent audit was carried out by CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor.

Speaking on the development, the managing director and chief executive officer of the bank, Yetunde Oni, said, “The security of customers’ information is central to the bank’s operations. This certification indicates that our payment systems and processes meet the PCI DSS standard and reflects the work of colleagues across the bank involved in protecting customer data.”

According to her, the renewal ensures that the Bank maintains unbroken PCI DSS certification, in keeping with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s requirement that banks sustain continuous compliance without any gap.
