Pras Michel, a founding member of Fugees, has turned himself in to start serving a 14-year sentence in a U.S. federal prison following his conviction on multiple criminal charges.
The 53-year-old Grammy-winning artist reported to a low-security correctional facility in Arizona on Thursday, according to his spokesperson. In a statement, representative Erica Dumas described the moment as deeply difficult for Michel and his loved ones, while emphasizing that he is complying with the legal process. She also noted that his legal team is still challenging the outcome of the case.
Michel was found guilty in April 2023 on 10 counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent for a foreign government. He was sentenced later that year after a high-profile trial in Washington, D.C.
During the proceedings, notable figures such as Leonardo DiCaprio and former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions testified. Prosecutors argued that Michel played a central role in channeling foreign funds into U.S. politics, including efforts linked to Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.
According to the U.S. Justice Department, Michel allegedly received more than $120 million from Malaysian financier Jho Low and directed portions of the money through intermediaries to influence American politics. Authorities also accused him of attempting to interfere with an ongoing investigation into Low, as well as tampering with witnesses and giving false testimony during his trial.
Prosecutors had pushed for a much harsher penalty, citing the seriousness of the offenses and arguing that Michel’s actions undermined national interests.
Before his legal troubles, Michel rose to global fame alongside fellow Fugees members Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean. The group achieved major commercial success, winning two Grammy Awards and selling millions of records worldwide.
Despite the sentence, Michel’s team maintains that the case is not over, signaling continued legal efforts as he begins his time in custody.
