The Imo State Police Command is currently at the center of a national firestorm following a shocking case of alleged institutional extortion. The scandal erupted after the arrest of 24-year-old Wisdom Onyeaju for the suspected defilement of a 15-year-old girl. While the initial arrest was expected to bring relief, it instead exposed a darker reality within the force. The victim’s family released a viral video claiming that officers stationed near the Government House in Owerri demanded a ₦100,000 bribe simply to perform their duty of recording a formal statement—effectively putting a price tag on justice for a minor.

The public outcry was swift and fierce, as the video highlighted the agonizing choice the family faced between seeking justice and succumbing to illegal financial demands. In response to the mounting pressure, the Command took immediate action by detaining the officers involved.

Reports reaching Megastar reveal that, to address the breach of conduct, an official orderly room trial—the internal disciplinary process for the Nigerian Police Force—has been fast-tracked and is set to commence on Monday, January 12, 2026. This hearing will decide whether the accused officers will be dismissed or face criminal prosecution.

As the community prepares for the trial, civil society groups have vowed to monitor the proceedings closely. The case has become a symbol of the ongoing struggle against police corruption in Nigeria, with many calling for this to be a turning point for accountability in Imo State. While the trial focuses on the officers’ misconduct, authorities have reassured the public that the original assault case against Onyeaju will proceed without interference, ensuring the young survivor’s quest for justice is not overshadowed by the very people meant to protect her.
