The annual Venice Carnival officially began on Sunday with a series of celebrations centered on the upcoming Winter Olympics hosted in Italy. This year’s event is centered on the theme “Olympus – back to the origins of the games,” a direct tribute to the international sporting competition scheduled to begin later this week. Large crowds gathered at the historic Rialto Bridge and along the city’s iconic lagoons to witness the opening festivities of the nearly two-week celebration.

The event, which bridges cultural tradition with contemporary sporting milestones, utilized Venice’s unique water-based geography for its inaugural displays. Organizers noted that the Olympic theme was chosen specifically to honor the start of the Winter Games, integrating classical Greek aesthetics with the traditional Venetian masquerade style. The festivities are expected to continue through mid-February, drawing significant international tourism to the region ahead of the Olympic opening ceremony.

Despite the celebratory atmosphere in Venice, international attention remained divided as reports surfaced regarding energy shortages in neighboring regions and ongoing civil unrest in Iran. However, the Venetian local authorities emphasized the importance of the carnival as a symbol of Italian heritage and global unity during the Olympic season. The city is prepared for a high volume of visitors over the next fourteen days as the program transitions from public water spectacles to private masked balls and cultural exhibitions.
