Abia State Governor Alex Otti has approved the establishment of a study centre for the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Aba, while urging Nigerians to embrace digital and distance education as a necessary shift in modern learning.
Speaking during a meeting with NOUN’s leadership, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Uduma Orji Uduma, Otti noted that virtual learning has become inevitable in a world driven by technology and global connectivity. He emphasized that online platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet now define how people interact and learn, making distance education a practical solution for many.
The governor directed relevant officials to begin upgrading the existing NOUN facility in Umuahia and described the proposed Aba centre as essential. He also instructed the Greater Aba Development Authority to secure a temporary site to enable immediate takeoff while plans for a permanent structure are underway.
Otti commended NOUN’s expansion efforts across Abia, highlighting existing centres in Asaga, Ohafia, and Umuahia. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to education, revealing that about 20 percent of the state’s annual budget has been allocated to the sector in recent years, alongside plans to launch three smart schools.
Earlier, the NOUN Vice Chancellor explained that the visit aimed to strengthen collaboration and expand access to open and distance learning. He noted that although the university operates about 120 study centres nationwide, only a few are located in the South-East, and appealed for support in acquiring land for the Aba centre.
