The much-anticipated biopic “Michael”, based on the life of late pop legend Michael Jackson, has debuted at the top of the North American box office, earning an estimated $97 million in its opening weekend.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed by Lionsgate, the film traces Jackson’s journey from child star to global music icon. The lead role is played by Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s nephew.
Industry analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research described the opening as historic, saying, “This is a record-shattering opening for a musical biography.”
While the film has been praised by audiences for its nostalgic and feel-good tone, critical reception has been less favourable. “Most critics feel the film is superficial and avoids the complicated parts of the performer’s life, including allegations of sexual misbehavior,” Gross noted, adding that a second part is already in development.
With earlier international releases already in play, the film has grossed nearly $220 million worldwide, according to Exhibitor Relations.
In second place, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earned $21.2 million, extending its strong run after leading the box office for three consecutive weeks. The animated sequel has now accumulated more than $775 million globally.
Third place went to Project Hail Mary, an Amazon MGM sci-fi comedy starring Ryan Gosling, which added $13.2 million and has reached nearly $600 million worldwide.
In fourth position was Warner Bros’ horror film The Mummy, which collected $5.6 million, while A24’s romantic drama The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, placed fifth with $2.6 million, bringing its global total to $80 million.
The rest of the top 10 included Hoppers ($1.9 million), You, Me & Tuscany ($1.5 million), Over Your Dead Body ($1.4 million), I Swear ($640,000), and Normal.
