Kate Henshaw Leads Nationwide Push for Menopause Awareness in Nigeria
Veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has taken a leading role in a new health advocacy campaign aimed at improving menopause awareness and education across Nigeria, bringing renewed attention to a subject often overlooked in public health discussions.
The campaign, unveiled during a major health conference in Lagos, brought together healthcare professionals, pharmacists, and wellness advocates to address the gaps in knowledge and support surrounding menopause. The initiative focuses on promoting science-based information and encouraging open conversations about hormonal changes that affect millions of women.
Speaking at the event, Henshaw drew from her personal experience, noting that many women remain unaware of menopause symptoms until much later in life. She explained that she only began to understand the changes in her body after the age of 50, stressing that lack of awareness often leaves women confused and unsupported during a critical stage of their health journey.
She emphasised that menopause, though a natural phase, is still widely misunderstood in Nigeria due to cultural silence and limited access to reliable health information. According to her, symptoms such as mood changes, skin dryness, and discomfort can significantly affect quality of life if not properly managed, making education and early awareness essential.
The advocacy campaign also highlights the importance of shifting from symptom-based treatment to preventive and informed healthcare. Experts at the conference underscored the need for evidence-based solutions and the role of pharmacists in guiding patients toward clinically supported options amid a growing market of wellness products.
In addition to raising awareness, the initiative seeks to normalise conversations around menopause, encouraging women to speak openly and seek appropriate care without stigma. Health advocates involved in the campaign noted that better education and support systems can significantly improve how women experience and manage this stage of life.
Henshaw’s involvement is being viewed as a major boost to the campaign, leveraging her public influence to bridge the gap between medical knowledge and everyday understanding. Her message, centred on informed choices and holistic wellbeing, is expected to resonate widely as Nigeria continues to expand conversations around women’s health.
