The Federal Government has commenced the rollout of a new HIV prevention injection following the arrival of 52,000 doses in the country on Friday morning, marking a significant step in ongoing public health interventions aimed at reducing new infections.
Officials from the Federal Government of Nigeria confirmed that the shipment represents the first batch in a phased distribution plan designed to expand access to modern HIV prevention options across priority populations. Health authorities said the introduction of the injectable formulation complements existing prevention methods, including oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and is expected to improve adherence due to its long-acting nature.
The rollout will be coordinated by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS in collaboration with international partners and state health ministries. Officials noted that distribution will initially focus on high-burden regions and selected healthcare facilities equipped to administer and monitor the injection.
A senior health official described the development as a milestone in the country’s HIV response, stating that “the introduction of long-acting prevention tools will strengthen our ability to reduce new infections and support individuals who may face challenges with daily medication adherence.” The official added that awareness campaigns and training for healthcare workers are already underway to ensure effective implementation.
Public health experts say the arrival of the doses could enhance Nigeria’s progress toward global targets aimed at ending HIV as a public health threat, particularly if uptake is sustained and supported by consistent funding, community engagement, and reliable supply chains. They emphasized the importance of education to address misconceptions and encourage eligible individuals to take advantage of the new preventive option.
Authorities also assured that monitoring systems have been put in place to track distribution, usage, and outcomes, while maintaining strict safety and regulatory standards. The initial rollout is expected to be expanded in subsequent phases as additional supplies are secured and logistical frameworks are strengthened nationwide.
