The driver accused in connection with a fatal road accident involving associates of British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua appeared before a magistrate court sitting in Lagos on Friday, where proceedings were adjourned to allow prosecutors present additional evidence.
The defendant was brought before the court amid heightened public attention surrounding the crash, which reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities and serious injuries. Prosecutors informed the court that investigations were still ongoing and requested more time to consolidate witness statements, forensic reports, and accident reconstruction findings.
According to the prosecution counsel, “The matter involves sensitive evidentiary materials that are yet to be fully compiled, and we respectfully seek an adjournment to enable the state conclude investigations properly.” The court subsequently granted the request, fixing a later date for continuation of proceedings.
Police authorities earlier confirmed that the accident occurred along a major roadway within Lagos jurisdiction and involved a vehicle allegedly conveying individuals linked to the boxer’s professional circle. Emergency responders were said to have arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, transporting victims to nearby medical facilities while law enforcement secured the area.
During the hearing, defence counsel urged the court to consider the rights of the accused, stating that “the defendant remains innocent until proven guilty and has cooperated fully with investigators since the incident occurred.” The defence also indicated readiness to challenge aspects of the prosecution’s claims once full disclosures are made.
Court officials noted that the adjournment would allow investigators finalize technical assessments, including vehicle condition analysis and eyewitness verification. Legal observers present described the proceedings as preliminary, emphasizing that substantive arguments are expected when the case resumes.
Outside the courtroom, public interest remained high due to the indirect association with Anthony Joshua, although neither the boxer nor his management team has been formally implicated in the incident. Authorities reiterated that the case is being treated strictly as a traffic and criminal investigation based on available evidence.
The presiding magistrate ordered that the defendant remain subject to previously imposed bail conditions pending the next hearing, warning all parties against public commentary capable of prejudicing judicial proceedings. The matter was thereafter adjourned for further evidence gathering.
