The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a former local government councillor in Lagos over alleged involvement in the trafficking of 40 kilograms of cannabis popularly known as “skunk”.
According to the anti-narcotics agency, part of the illicit substance was discovered concealed inside baby diapers in what officials described as an attempt to evade detection during transportation.
The NDLEA said the suspect, who previously served as a councillor in one of the local government areas in Lagos State, was apprehended during an intelligence-led operation carried out by operatives of the agency.
Preliminary investigations by the agency revealed that the suspect was allegedly involved in the movement and distribution of large quantities of cannabis within and outside parts of the state.
Officials said a total of 40 kilograms of the substance was recovered during the operation, with some of the packages hidden in baby diapers to disguise the contents and avoid suspicion during transit.
An NDLEA official familiar with the operation said the concealment method was part of tactics increasingly used by drug traffickers to bypass routine security checks.
“The suspect attempted to conceal part of the consignment inside baby diapers in order to evade detection, but our operatives uncovered the substance during the search,” the official said.
The agency said the suspect is currently in custody while further investigations are ongoing to determine possible accomplices and the broader network connected to the trafficking operation.
NDLEA authorities also reiterated their commitment to intensifying enforcement actions against drug trafficking and abuse across the country.
The agency urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist law enforcement agencies in combating the distribution of illicit drugs.
