A high-level delegation from the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, has conducted a comprehensive assessment of the Gusau International Airport, signaling a potential shift for the facility to become a national center for aviation training. The visit, led by Nasir Muhammad Bungura, focused on evaluating the infrastructure and operational readiness of the airport, which is currently under construction by the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal. The delegation’s findings suggest the facility could serve as a strategic hub for specialized training, offering students practical experience in a modern environment.

During the inspection, the NCAT team, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Zamfara State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Haruna Dikko Gusau, reviewed key components of the project, including the 3.4-kilometer primary runway, terminal buildings, navigational aids, and safety apparatus. Mr. Bungura expressed high satisfaction with the quality of the work, stating, “The standards we have observed here today are commendable and align strongly with international best practices. Gusau International Airport possesses a robust foundation. Our visit was to assess how this facility can serve as a practical hub for our training programs, offering our students real-world exposure to a modern, functioning airport environment.”
The proposed collaboration aims to utilize the airport as a node for specialized training in air traffic control, safety management, and aircraft ground operations. For NCAT, the partnership would provide cadets with real-time operational exposure, while for Zamfara State, it secures a role for the airport in national human capital development. Engr. Haruna Dikko Gusau emphasized that the airport is intended to be more than a transit point, remarking, “This visit is a testament to the growing strategic importance of Gusau International Airport. We are not just building infrastructure; we are creating a hub for opportunity. Partnering with a prestigious institution like NCAT will ensure this facility contributes meaningfully to the advancement of Nigeria’s aviation industry.”
The Gusau International Airport is part of a broader “smart airport” initiative by Governor Lawal to boost regional connectivity and economic growth. Contractors recently indicated that the project is on track to reach 90% completion this month, with full operations expected to begin later in 2026. Further discussions between NCAT and the Zamfara State Government are expected to formalize the training framework, which may include the integration of the facility into NCAT’s official curriculum for specialized training exercises.
