New NCC Board Reassures Of Commitment To Driving Nigeria’s Digital Economy

To further strengthen Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has presented a newly constituted Board.

The new Board recently held its induction retreat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, targeted at aligning governance priorities with the Commission’s strategic mandate while enhancing members’ understanding of their regulatory responsibilities.

The retreat, chaired by NCC Board member, Chief Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe, provided a forum for robust engagement between the Board and the Commission’s Management. It also served as an opportunity for the NCC to reaffirm its critical role as a catalyst for national development and the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.

Designed to strengthen institutional governance and regulatory effectiveness, the retreat featured in-depth and forward-looking discussions on the legal, governance, and regulatory frameworks guiding the telecommunications industry.

Sessions were facilitated by experts with extensive professional experience. Mrs. Yetunde Akinloye led a detailed review of the Nigerian Communications Act (2003), offering insights into its relevance and applicability in addressing modern regulatory challenges.

Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, spoke on effective board governance, emphasizing the importance of oversight within the context of a national telecommunications regulator.

Adding a global perspective, Prof. Hyacinth Nwana examined the evolving role of regulators, highlighting the future of regulation in an increasingly digital and interconnected world. Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, OFR, SAN, also provided guidance on core principles of corporate governance, stressing accountability, transparency, and strategic leadership.

The sessions were rigorous and candid, with discussions focused on strengthening governance frameworks, enhancing regulatory credibility, and ensuring the delivery of measurable outcomes for consumers, industry stakeholders, and the wider digital economy.

Overall, the induction retreat underscored the Board’s commitment to effective oversight, sound governance, and strategic leadership in advancing the NCC’s mandate to promote innovation, competition, and inclusive digital growth across Nigeria.
