The Nigerian Presidency has formally clarified the departures of Wale Edun, former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, and Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, former Minister of Housing and Urban Development. Following a week of intense speculation and rumors regarding a potential cabinet reshuffle or “sack,” official statements confirmed that both ministers resigned voluntarily from their positions within the Federal Executive Council.
Wale Edun, who marked his 70th birthday on Monday, April 20, 2026, submitted his resignation letter on the same day. He cited persistent health challenges as the primary reason for his decision to step down from public office. Prior to the formal announcement by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Edun held a private valedictory meeting with President Tinubu at the State House to finalize the transition. He has been directed to hand over his ministerial responsibilities to Taiwo Oyedele, the former Minister of State for Finance, who now takes over as the substantive Minister.
Simultaneously, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa resigned from his role leading the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. During his tenure, Dangiwa was noted for his work on the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in the areas of affordable housing expansion and land reform. President Tinubu has named Muttaqha Rabe Darma as the minister-designate to succeed him, pending Senate confirmation. In the interim, Dangiwa was instructed to hand over the ministry’s affairs to the current Minister of State.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, emphasized that these exits were not forced, stating that both officials chose to leave their posts and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation. President Tinubu has publicly thanked both Edun and Dangiwa for their contributions to the administration’s economic and infrastructural goals. The administrative handover processes for both portfolios are expected to be concluded by the end of today, April 23, 2026.
