The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) is set to commence export of a new light, sweet crude oil grade known as Cawthorne in March as part of efforts to boost national revenue and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global oil market.
Officials said the new crude stream, produced from fields in the Niger Delta, is characterised by low sulphur content and high quality, making it attractive to international refiners seeking cleaner feedstock for fuel production. The development is expected to expand Nigeria’s crude portfolio and improve earnings amid fluctuating global oil prices.
NNPC stated that the introduction of Cawthorne aligns with ongoing strategies to optimise upstream output, diversify export grades, and enhance the country’s competitiveness against other light crude producers. Industry sources noted that light, sweet crude typically commands premium pricing because it is easier and cheaper to refine into high-value petroleum products such as gasoline and aviation fuel.
A senior company official said the new grade would open additional market opportunities for Nigeria, particularly in Europe and Asia, where demand for low-sulphur crude remains strong. “This grade will further strengthen Nigeria’s reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality crude oil,” the official said, adding that export logistics and contractual arrangements with international buyers have been finalised ahead of the March shipment window.
Energy analysts say the move could help stabilise government revenues, given the country’s heavy dependence on oil exports for foreign exchange earnings and budget financing. They also noted that expanding crude varieties allows producers to tailor supplies to specific refinery configurations worldwide.
The launch comes as Nigeria seeks to increase production levels, curb oil theft, and attract investment into the upstream sector. Observers say sustained output and efficient export operations will be critical to maximising the financial impact of the new crude grade on the national economy.
