British-Nigerian social commentator Abisoye Olukoya Michael, popularly known as Oyemyke, has sparked significant conversation online after robustly defending members of the Igbo elite who have declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Addressing the criticism leveled against these leaders, Oyemyke argued that political alignment is a matter of individual and strategic choice rather than ethnic obligation. He directly addressed those questioning the loyalty of Igbo leaders, stating, “Let them support Yoruba man,” as he emphasized that political interests often transcend tribal sentiments in the pursuit of national development and inclusion.

The media personality took particular aim at critics who use social media to harass prominent figures for their political leanings, suggesting that the focus should remain on governance rather than the ethnicity of a leader’s supporters. During his address, Oyemyke pointed out the hypocrisy in the backlash, noting that political alliances are fluid and necessary for the survival of any ethnic group within a diverse federation. “They are looking for what is best for their people,” he remarked, adding that the Igbo elite are entitled to navigate the political landscape as they see fit without being subjected to “cyber-bullying or ethnic blackmail” from those who disagree with the current administration.

The commentary comes amid a polarized political atmosphere where ethnic voting patterns remain a sensitive subject in Nigeria. Oyemyke’s stance suggests a push toward a more cosmopolitan view of Nigerian politics, where cross-regional support is seen as a tool for unity rather than a betrayal of one’s roots. He concluded his critique by urging Nigerians to move past the 2023 electoral grievances and hold the government accountable as a collective unit, rather than attacking individuals for their associations. “If an Igbo man sees value in a Yoruba man’s leadership, that is his prerogative,” he asserted, reinforcing his call for political tolerance across the country.
