King Charles III is reportedly preparing to hand over the British throne to his eldest son, Prince William, within the next 12 months, according to claims published on March 2 by journalist Rob Shuter in his Substack newsletter Naughty But Nice.
Citing unnamed palace aides and courtiers, the report stated that discussions about a transition are underway as the 77-year-old monarch continues treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer diagnosed in 2024. “The institution is preparing emotionally, even if the paperwork hasn’t caught up,” a longtime aide was quoted as saying, adding that William is “already king unofficially” in “many ways” due to his deep involvement in royal duties.
Charles ascended the throne in 2022 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. According to the report, concerns about his health have intensified internal considerations about the pace and structure of a potential handover. A senior courtier was quoted as saying, “The transition will look measured and dignified.”
A palace insider also told the publication that the king intends to manage the process carefully. “Charles will not be seen as pushed. He has waited a lifetime for this role. When he steps back, it will be entirely on his terms,” the source said. A former palace adviser added, “If there’s a handover, it won’t feel like surrender. It will feel inevitable.”
The report also noted that William’s wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, has been resuming public engagements following her own cancer diagnosis in 2024. The Princess of Wales, 44, shares three children — Prince George of Wales, Princess Charlotte of Wales and Prince Louis of Wales — with William.
A source previously told Star in January that the princess is eager to return fully to her duties. “She’s the type of person that feels happiest when she feels useful, so even when she’s home resting, she’s usually working on something,” the source said, adding that she has “so much she wants to accomplish this coming year.”
Buckingham Palace has not issued an official statement regarding the reported plans for a transition.
