Nigerian chess master and advocate, Tunde Onakoya, has said that he will be heading to Hong Kong this June to compete in the World Team Rapid and Blitz Championship.

Onakoya announced this  on X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating that he has joined the prestigious WR Chess team. This move will see him playing alongside some of the biggest names in the global chess community.

The founder of Chess in Slums Africa expressed his pride in being selected, noting that he will be teammates with legends like Viswanathan Anand, as well as top-ranked players like Wadim Rosenstein and Alexandra Botez (akanemsko).

“Proud to announce that I’ll be representing the WR Chess team at the World Team Rapid and Blitz Championship in Hong Kong in June,” Onakoya shared. “I’ll be playing alongside my personal legends and some of the top players in the world.”

Tunde Onakoya is well known for founding “Chess in Slums Africa,” a group that teaches children in underserved areas to play chess and improve their lives. He also recently gained global attention for breaking the world record for the longest chess marathon.
