Former U.S. President Barack Obama has revealed that political pressures linked to Donald Trump have caused “genuine tension” in his marriage to Michelle Obama.
In a recent interview, Obama explained that ongoing expectations for him to publicly respond to Trump-era policies and political developments have kept him actively engaged in politics long after leaving office. He said this continued involvement has been a source of frustration for Michelle, who would prefer he step back and spend more time enjoying life outside politics.
According to Obama, Michelle wants him to slow down and focus more on their personal life, rather than repeatedly returning to campaign efforts, public commentary, and party support activities.
The former president also reflected on how his initial belief that presidential institutions would limit Trump’s actions proved unrealistic, which increased calls for him to speak out—especially during controversial policy moments.
Despite pressure from some Democrats for him to take a more aggressive public role, Obama said he is cautious about becoming a constant political commentator, insisting he prefers to maintain his position as a party leader rather than a media-style critic.
He also acknowledged long-standing strains that political life has placed on his family, noting the unique pressures they faced during and after their time in the White House.
Meanwhile, speculation about Michelle Obama entering politics continues among some supporters, though many within the Democratic Party believe such expectations are unlikely in the current political climate.
