Timi Dakolo says he creates art, his stance on being classified as gospel artiste
Renowned Nigerian vocalist and lyricist, Timi Dakolo, has clarified his stance on being labeled as a gospel artiste, stating that his musical skill transcends any single genre.
In a recent interview with Cool FM Nigeria’s Dotun, Dakolo addressed the common perception of him as a gospel musician.
When asked directly if he falls into the gospel category, he firmly stated otherwise.
Dakolo declared, “I am not, by any chance. I always say to people, ‘Is there a gospel banker or architect?’ It is you that decided that is what you want to do. Art is art.
Expounding on his perspective, Dakolo emphasized his identity as an artiste who creates diverse expressions rather than conforming to a singular genre.
He revealed his versatility by citing songs like “Great Nation” and “Wish Me Well,” which defy the idea of wedding songs often associated with him.
He clarified, “I am just an artist. In fact, I am not an artiste; I am a creator of art. You can box my music into a particular genre. I am much more than a wedding singer. ‘Great Nation’ and ‘Wish Me Well’ are not wedding songs. If listen to my new album, you are going to hear that [my diversity]. ‘Men Of The South’ is a song about cultural pride.”
Additionally, Dakolo stated that while he frequently performs at gospel events, his participation stems from his Christian faith rather than be boxed into a particular genre.
