    Lagos NAWOJ Chairperson, Dr. Adeola Ekine inducted to Girl Guides Association

    …ready to celebrate105th anniversary of Nigerian Girl Guides Association

    The Chairperson of the National Association of Women Journalists, Lagos State Council, Dr. Adeola Ekine has been inducted into the Nigeria Girl Guides Association.

    The event took place on Thursday, 27 June 2024, at 9 Iyalla St, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos where the Nigeria Girl Guides Association delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Chapter of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) at the NUJ council.

    The purpose of the visit was two-fold it includes: To induct Dr. Adeola Ekine, Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos Chapter, into the Girl Guides Association and to encourage female participation in the forthcoming 105th Anniversary of the Nigerian Girl Guides Association.

    It was gathered that the anniversary event is scheduled to take place from August 13th to August 17th, 2024, at St. Gregory College, Obalende, Lagos, as Lagos State will host representatives from other states across Nigeria.

    Miss Bunmi Yekini, NAWOJ Vice Chairperson, welcomed the delegation and expressed gratitude for their visit.

    Also, Mrs. Titilola Oluwatoyin, the National PRO of the Girl Guides Association, briefly introduced the association to the audience.

    Speaking after the induction, Dr. Adeola Ekine, who is now a member of the Girl Guides Association, emphasized the need for collaboration between NAWOJ and the association.

    She highlighted NAWOJ’s passion for the girl child and women, emphasizing the importance of teaching young girls proper behavior from a tender age.

    Dr. Ekine expressed her commitment to partnering with journalists to ensure that all reports related to girls receive adequate coverage on various media platforms.

    Deaconess Mrs. Olufunmilayo Thomas, the Chief Commissioner of the Girl Guides Association, praised Dr. Ekine for welcoming them.

    When asked about her membership, Mrs. Thomas revealed that she had been part of the association since 1968, with a break, and then joined back in 1980.

    She emphasized that membership in the association is for life and encouraged girls and youth to actively participate in the upcoming anniversary camp.

    The camp fee is set at #5000 naira, and campers from neighboring African countries are expected to attend.

    Mrs. Thomas also highlighted the role of state Governors’ wives as Patrons of the Girl Guides Association in each state, as she urged their presence at the August event.

    Deaconess Rhoda Thomas, known for her extensive involvement in the association, currently serves as the Chief Commissioner for the B Zone, which includes Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Kwara, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo.

    In a closing remark, Mrs. Modupe Caroline Akingbesote, the state Commissioner for the Girl Guides Association, thanked NAWOJ for their warm reception and expressed excitement about the collaboration between the two organizations.

    Also, Mrs Omowunmi JIMOH, one of the Youth leaders of the Girl Guides on delegation, thanked NAWOJ for the warm reception accorded them, adding that the Guide is ready to Partner with the Association.

    The delegation present included Mrs. Modupe Caroline Akingbesote (Lagos State Commissioner for Nigeria Girl Guides), Deaconess Rhoda Funmilola Thomas (Chief Commissioner), and Hon. Mrs. Titilola Oluwatoyin (National PRO).

    Other members present were Mrs. Omowunmi Ajayi, Mrs. Ilesanmi Tolu, and Mrs. Ebunoluwa Olaoluwa.
