Canada adjusts minimum wage;  significant amount added for each province in 2024

Adjustments are tied to inflation and cost of living to protect the real value of wages over time.

In 2024, Canada’s federal regulations law will impact the Canadian labour market, including the Canada Hourly Wage Increase. The minimum wage is currently set at $16.50 per hour, with adjustments based on inflation and cost of living.

Minimum wage regulations ensure a standard of living for workers, aiming to reduce poverty and economic inequality. By setting a legal minimum for hourly wages, the government maintains economic balance.

Minimum wage increases can also influence employment rates and business operating costs.

Overview of the Canada hourly wage increase in 2024

Current Minimum Wage: $16.50 per Hour

As of 2024, the Canada Minimum Wage is set at $16.50 per hour. This rate is the legal minimum that employers must pay their employees, ensuring that all workers receive a wage for their labour.

However, the minimum wage is not uniform across the country, it varies by province and territory, with each region having the authority to set its own minimum wage rate based on local economic conditions.

In 2024, several provinces have announced their intentions to raise the minimum wage. These increases are part of efforts to align wages with the cost of living and inflation.

Prince Edward Island: The minimum wage will increase to $15.40 on April 1, 2024, with a further increase to $16.00 on October 1, 2024.

Saskatchewan: Effective October 1, 2024, the minimum wage in Saskatchewan will rise to $15.00.

Nova Scotia: Starting September 1, 2024, the minimum wage will increase, and workers’ compensation coverage will be broadened to include those suffering from chronic stress at work.

Nunavut: As of January 1, 2024, Nunavut will have the highest minimum wage in Canada, increasing from $16.00 to $19.00 per hour.

Yukon: Currently, Yukon has the highest provincial wage in Canada at $16.77 per hour, and this is expected to increase further in line with inflation.

Canada hourly wage effective dates in 2024

The minimum hourly wage will increase at different times throughout the year, depending on the province or territory. Here are the key dates and details:

Prince Edward Island: The minimum wage will rise by $0.40 to $15.40 on April 1, 2024, with an additional $0.60 increase to $16.00 on October 1, 2024.

Nova Scotia: The minimum wage of $15.00 will see an annual increase of 1% plus inflation starting April 1, 2024.

Ontario: As part of its annual tradition, Ontario plans to raise its minimum wage on October 1, 2024. The current minimum wage is $16.55 per hour.
