Sanwo-Olu launches emergency, new accident centre in Epe

… aiming at bridging the gap in emergency medical care of the people.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inaugurated an Accident and Emergency Centre in Federal Medical Centre, in the Epe Area of the state.

The facility, donated by Custodian Foundation, is a purpose-built trauma centre designed to bridge the gap in emergency medical care in Epe.

This was disclosed in a statement released by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, who noted that the trauma centre is the first of its kind in the area.

He explained that the lack of such infrastructure had long hindered operations at the hospital, formerly known as Epe General Hospital.

With the launch, residents can now expect quicker and more coordinated responses during emergencies, reducing the panic often caused by unpredictable response times.

“In an intervention initiated by Custodian Investment Plc to bridge medical emergency care gap in the Epe Division.

“Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Health, took delivery of the fully-furnished facility funded by Custodian Social Responsibility Foundation.

“Prior to the intervention, Epe had no dedicated trauma centre that could handle major emergency cases, burdening the old General Hospital to grapple with unpredictable response time in emergency situations.

“The dedicated emergency centre would address critical healthcare needs and expand access to quality life-saving services in the division,” the statement reads.

Sanwo-Olu described the newly launched project as a major milestone in public-private partnership efforts within Lagos’ health sector.

He noted that the facility raises the bar for collaboration between the government and private sector in driving healthcare development and s its critical role in handling life-threatening emergencies.

The facility, according to the governor, reflects his administration’s broader vision of a progressive Lagos where the wellbeing of residents remains a top priority.

He said, “I am delighted to witness yet another milestone in our journey toward delivering quality, accessible, and responsive healthcare services across Lagos State.

“This administration is setting a new benchmark in fulfilling its promise of infrastructural and social development.

“The commissioning of the Accident and Emergency Centre in Epe is a bold step forward in expanding access to urgent and lifesaving medical services, especially in our riverine and rural communities.

“This is a demonstration of our unwavering commitment to building a healthier, safer Lagos for all. This intervention clear manifests our vision for a progressive Lagos, where health is treated as a priority.

“With state-of-the-art equipment, well-structured treatment areas, and modern support facilities, this centre is designed to provide swift, life-saving care in emergency situations.”

Sanwo-Olu stated that the triage units, emergency wards, diagnostic facilities, and waiting areas would greatly improve the quality of care at the centre.

He added that the project would boost staff efficiency, speed up emergency response, and build public trust in the health system.

The Governor commended Custodian Foundation for its commitment to social responsibility, saying the emergency centre would benefit not just Epe but nearby communities as well, ensuring quicker interventions and reducing preventable deaths.

Kemi Ogunyemi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, said the newly-commisioned centre is a symbol of innovation and patient-focused care. She said it features four emergency zones, Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green , designed for rapid assessment and treatment.

She also highlighted its sustainability, with solar power, eco-friendly materials, modern theatres, staff lounges, and training rooms, all aimed at efficient, dignified care.

The Managing Director, Custodian Investment Plc , Wole Oshin, in the statement also explained that after failed attempts to site the project along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the Foundation settled on Epe due to its strategic location and ease of access.
