TikTok eliminates 3.6 million Nigerian videos for violations in Q1 2025

TikTok, the short video platform owned by ByteDance, removed over 3.6 million videos posted by Nigerian users in the first quarter of 2025 for violating its content policies.

This was disclosed in TikTok’s Q1 2025 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report.

According to the report, the number represented about a 50 per cent increase from the 2.4 million videos that were taken down in the last quarter of 2024.

TikTok reported a proactive detection rate of 98.4% in Q1 2025, meaning the vast majority of content removed was taken down before being reported by users.

Additionally, 92.1% of the violative videos were removed within 24 hours of posting.

In March 2025, the platform also took action against covert influence operations, removing 129 accounts across West Africa linked to such activities.

In Q1 2025, TikTok removed over 211 million videos worldwide, a rise from 153 million in the previous quarter. More than 184 million of these removals were carried out using automated detection tools.

The platform’s global proactive detection rate hit 99 per cent, showing continued progress in swiftly identifying and removing harmful content.

During the same period, TikTok also deleted 44.7 million comments generated by fake accounts, as part of its crackdown on spam and fake engagement.

“We remain vigilant in our efforts to detect external threats and safeguard the platform from fake accounts and engagement. These threats persistently probe and attack our systems, leading to occasional fluctuations in the reported metrics within these areas.

“Despite this, we are steadfast in our commitment to promptly identify and remove any accounts, content, or activities that seek to artificially boost popularity on our platform,” the company stated.
