The family of late Nigerian football icon Peter Rufai has announced that the former Super Eagles goalkeeper will be buried on August 22, 2025.
In response, the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) has called for state honours and a carnival-like farewell in Lagos to celebrate the life and legacy of the national hero.
PFAN has appealed to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko, and NFF President Ibrahim Gusau to support the Rufai family and help deliver a befitting farewell.
The association described Rufai as a patriotic and committed servant who gave his all in service to Nigeria.
A PFAN delegation led by ex-international Tajudeen Ajide, along with Clement Temile (1st Vice President), Taju Disu (Lagos State Chairman), and Princewill Gbogbodu (National Treasurer), paid a condolence visit to the Rufai family at their residence in Amuwo Odofin Estate, Lagos, on July 30.Nigerian history books
Dele Rufai, a representative of the family, expressed gratitude for the visit and the show of support, describing it as a source of comfort during a difficult time.
As part of the farewell arrangements, PFAN is working with the Lagos State Sports Commission and the Lagos State Football Association to organise a Valedictory Football Match in Rufai’s honour. Scheduled for August 22 in Lagos, the match will feature all registered football clubs and academies in the state, who are expected to appear in their official kits as a tribute.
Members of All Stars International Football Clubs from different divisions are also expected to take part in the event.
Peter Rufai, who passed away recently after a brief illness remains one of the most celebrated figures in Nigerian football history.
He is remembered for his remarkable contributions to the national team and for being a symbol of excellence and leadership in Nigerian football and by extension sports in general.
