Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), operator of the joint venture with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has made public the discovery of new oil fields, including Meji NW-1, expected to add about 40,000 barrels per day to Nigeria’s production capacity and support the country’s energy transition goals.
CNL’s chairman and managing director, Jim Swartz, made known during the visit of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, to the company’s operational hub in Escravos, Delta State. He said Chevron remains committed to investing in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, highlighting its continuous contribution to the economy over the past 60 years through onshore and offshore operations.
Swartz noted that Chevron has successfully converted legacy joint venture leases under the Petroleum Industry Act, renewed deepwater leases, and advanced gas monetisation projects aligned with the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas initiative. “We are proud to deliver affordable, reliable and ever cleaner energy while helping unlock Nigeria’s full energy potential,” he said.
CNL’s director, NNPCL/JV, Segun Kuteyi, outlined the company’s “North Star” strategy aimed at boosting crude oil output, optimising gas utilisation, and enhancing operational efficiency to meet Nigeria’s energy demands.
The Minister of State for Petroleum commended Chevron’s resilience, describing it as the only international oil company that maintained operations in swamp and shallow-water areas of the Niger Delta while others divested. He praised the company’s integrity, community engagement, and deployment of technology for surveillance and security monitoring.
During the visit, Lokpobiri toured Chevron’s facilities, including the Escravos Gas Plant, Gas-to-Liquids facility, and the West African Gas Pipeline, which collectively support domestic power generation, fertiliser production, and regional energy security.
