Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has been taken overseas for emergency medical care after suffering a stroke.
A senior government official disclosed the development on Sunday, characterising the minister’s medical situation as critical. While acknowledging that Edun is receiving specialised treatment abroad, the source expressed doubt about his ability to return to his official duties.

“The situation is grave. While he may pull through, a return to active service appears unlikely,” the official stated, revealing that the stroke resulted in significant paralysis. “The extent of the paralysis is substantial. We pray for divine guidance. The persistent dollar shortage remains a critical issue.”
Security sources, including personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS), have reportedly confirmed Edun’s serious condition, describing him as “critically unwell.” According to the source, the medical emergency may stem from exhaustion and stress caused by his gruelling work schedule and unhealthy lifestyle patterns. Top government officials reportedly maintain punishing routines with insufficient rest, erratic eating schedules, and minimal sleep—often working into the early morning hours before resuming after brief periods of rest.
In a Sunday statement, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed that Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, will lead the country’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, DC, starting Monday, October 13.
“Cardoso, as the alternate Governor, replaces the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, who is indisposed,” Onanuga stated.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu departed Abuja on Sunday for Rome, Italy, to attend the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government Level Meeting focused on West Africa’s security challenges. The gathering, scheduled to begin October 14, will convene heads of state, senior intelligence and military officials from African nations, and representatives from intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to address evolving security threats in the region.
The Aqaba Process is a counterterrorism platform established by Jordan’s King Abdullah II in 2015 and co-chaired by Jordan and Italy. It addresses complex security issues facing West Africa, including expanding terrorist networks, the crime-terror connection, and the convergence of land-based terrorism in the Sahel with maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
Edun’s Background and Impact
Edun assumed his position as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy on August 21, 2023, following his appointment by President Tinubu. The two share a longstanding professional history dating to Tinubu’s governorship of Lagos State, where Edun served as Finance Commissioner from 1999 to 2004.
In his current role, Edun has been responsible for Nigeria’s fiscal policy, economic strategy, and coordination of financial institutions. As a key member of Tinubu’s economic team, his absence could significantly affect ongoing fiscal reforms and budget preparations. Despite health warnings, he participated in budget deliberations with the Senate as recently as Thursday.
