US President Donald Trump has claimed that about 33.3 per cent of Nigerian immigrant households receive some form of public assistance in the United States.
Trump made the claim in a chart he shared on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, detailing welfare participation rates among immigrant households by country of origin.
The post comes as the Trump administration continues to tighten immigration rules, with access to public benefits now a major factor in determining who is allowed to enter or remain in the United States.
The chart, titled “Immigrant Welfare Recipient Rates by Country of Origin,” covers immigrants from about 120 countries and territories. It shows the percentage of households receiving government support such as food assistance, healthcare benefits, and other welfare programmes.
According to the data shared by Trump, Nigeria was placed around the middle of the chart, with 33.3 per cent of Nigerian immigrant households reportedly benefiting from US public assistance.
Countries with the highest welfare participation rates among immigrants were listed as Bhutan (81.4 per cent), Yemen (75.2 per cent), Somalia (71.9 per cent), the Marshall Islands (71.4 per cent), and Afghanistan and the Dominican Republic (68.1 per cent each).
On the other end of the scale, immigrants from countries such as Bermuda, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Korea, and Kenya recorded the lowest welfare usage rates, ranging between 25 and 29 per cent.
Trump’s disclosure comes amid a wave of tougher immigration policies.
In June 2025, the White House announced a presidential proclamation imposing full and partial travel bans on several countries, citing security concerns, weak identity verification systems, and poor cooperation with US immigration authorities.
