The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has issued a stern warning that any individuals or groups contemplating unconstitutional actions against the government will face decisive consequences, reaffirming the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to democratic governance and national stability. The warning was delivered during a high-level engagement with senior officers and personnel at an operational command headquarters on Wednesday.
Addressing the gathering, Air Marshal Aneke stressed that the Armed Forces remain firmly subordinate to civil authority and will not tolerate any attempt to undermine the nation’s constitutional order. “Let it be clear that the Nigerian Air Force stands resolutely behind the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said. “Any person found engaging in or supporting activities aimed at destabilizing our democracy will face the full weight of the law.”
The Air Chief noted that the military’s core mandate is to defend the territorial integrity of the country and support civil authorities in maintaining internal security, not to interfere in political processes. He described recent speculations and rumors circulating in some quarters as “unfounded and dangerous,” warning that such narratives could erode public trust in national institutions. “We are professionals. Our allegiance is to the Nigerian people and to the democratic system they have chosen,” he added.
Air Marshal Aneke also called on officers and airmen to remain vigilant and disciplined, urging them to reject any overtures that could compromise the integrity of the service. “Discipline, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority are non-negotiable values within the Nigerian Air Force,” he stated. “We will not allow a few misguided individuals to drag this institution into disrepute.”
Security analysts say the statement comes amid heightened regional sensitivities following recent political upheavals in parts of West Africa, although no official indication has been given of any imminent threat within Nigeria. A senior defense official, speaking on background, remarked that the warning was “a proactive reassurance to citizens and international partners that Nigeria’s armed forces remain committed to democratic stability.”
The Air Chief further emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration in safeguarding the nation’s peace, noting that “stability is a collective responsibility that requires cooperation between the military, security agencies, and the civilian population.” He assured that the Air Force would continue to carry out its constitutional duties with professionalism and restraint.
The renewed declaration of loyalty to democratic governance is seen as part of broader efforts by the Armed Forces to reinforce public confidence and underscore their non-partisan role in national affairs.
