The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a scheduled maintenance exercise at the Zungeru Substation that will disrupt electricity supply in parts of Niger State on Wednesday, February 18, and Thursday, February 19, 2026.
According to the company, the planned work will take place between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on both days, during which transmission lines connected to the facility will be temporarily shut down to allow engineers to carry out essential servicing and system upgrades.
TCN said the maintenance is necessary to enhance operational efficiency and prevent unplanned outages in the future. A statement from the company noted, “The planned outage is to enable our technical team to safely conduct maintenance on critical equipment at the Zungeru Substation. This will improve reliability of power supply in the long term.”
Communities expected to experience interruptions include areas served by feeders linked to the Zungeru transmission infrastructure, particularly within Niger State and adjoining locations dependent on the same grid segment.
Electricity distribution companies in the affected areas have been notified to prepare customers for the temporary outage. Residents and businesses have been advised to make alternative arrangements during the maintenance window, especially those relying on continuous power for commercial or medical operations.
A regional power official emphasized that the shutdown is strictly precautionary. “We understand the inconvenience this may cause, but the work is essential to stabilize the network and avoid sudden system failures,” the official said.
The Zungeru facility is a key component of Nigeria’s national grid, transmitting electricity generated from nearby power installations to several parts of the country. Any maintenance activity at the substation typically has ripple effects across connected distribution networks.
TCN appealed for public understanding and cooperation, assuring that supply would be restored immediately after the completion of daily work. “Power will be reinstated as soon as maintenance activities are concluded each day,” the company stated.
The scheduled intervention comes amid ongoing efforts by the transmission operator to strengthen grid infrastructure nationwide and reduce the frequency of system disturbances that have affected electricity supply in recent years.
