The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has terminated the licenses of five Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators over persistent under-performance, marking a significant shift in the state’s waste management strategy.
According to officials, the affected operators failed to meet service standards, including timely waste evacuation and adherence to operational guidelines. Their removal is part of a broader effort by LAWMA to improve efficiency and accountability within the system.
In response, the agency has begun a comprehensive realignment of waste collection routes across Lagos. This restructuring aims to close service gaps, reduce delays in refuse collection, and ensure more consistent coverage in densely populated and underserved areas.
Residents in the impacted zones have been advised to cooperate with newly assigned PSP operators and adhere strictly to designated waste disposal schedules. LAWMA emphasized that the reforms are necessary to address long-standing challenges in the sector, particularly as Lagos continues to experience rapid population growth.
The agency also warned that it will maintain strict oversight going forward, with routine performance evaluations and the possibility of further sanctions for operators who fail to meet expectations.
