President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Paul Kagame have held high-level talks aimed at deepening diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Rwanda, with discussions including a proposed reciprocal 30-day visa-free arrangement for citizens of both countries.
The meeting focused on expanding cooperation in trade, technology, aviation, regional security, and intra-African investment as both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to stronger African integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
According to officials familiar with the discussions, Nigeria is considering granting Rwandan citizens a 30-day visa-free entry policy on a reciprocal basis, matching Rwanda’s relatively open visa regime for African travelers. The proposal is expected to encourage tourism, business travel, and stronger people-to-people connections between the two nations.
Tinubu noted that closer cooperation among African countries remains critical to unlocking economic growth, improving mobility across the continent, and reducing dependence on foreign markets. Kagame also emphasized the importance of regional partnerships in driving innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable development across Africa.
The talks further explored possible collaborations in fintech, education, healthcare, and infrastructure development, with both countries seeking to leverage their growing influence within Africa’s economic and diplomatic landscape.
If approved, the visa-free arrangement would mark another significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen continental diplomacy and improve regional integration through easier travel and expanded economic partnerships.
