    The Super Falcons

Both countries are fighting to book the only available spot for Brazil 2027.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons and South Africa’s Banyana Banyana will renew one of African women’s football’s biggest rivalries on Thursday evening as they fight for a second chance to reach the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The high-stakes play-off, scheduled for the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, kicks off at 8pm GMT, which is 9pm Nigerian time. The winner will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs for a place at the global tournament.

Both sides arrived at this stage after suffering quarter-final defeats at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Falcons were edged 1-0 by Cameroon on Sunday, with Myriam Nyadjou Wamen scoring the only goal of the contest. Nigeria created opportunities but could not find the equaliser as their hopes of retaining the continental crown disappeared.

Banyana Banyana, meanwhile, were beaten 2-1 by hosts Morocco. South Africa fell two goals behind before Thembi Kgatlana pulled one back in the second half, but the reigning African champions could not complete the comeback.

The meeting therefore carries far greater significance than a conventional WAFCON consolation match. With the four quarter-final winners already securing automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup, the four losing sides were left to battle for the remaining African route through the play-off system.

For Nigeria, the match represents an opportunity to preserve their remarkable record of appearing at every FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Super Falcons also remain Africa’s most successful side at the WAFCON, with 10 titles, including their triumph in the previous edition.

South Africa will be equally determined to stay alive. Banyana Banyana have established themselves as one of the continent’s strongest teams since winning their maiden WAFCON title in 2022, and coach Desiree Ellis has stressed the importance of mental and physical readiness ahead of the encounter.

The rivalry adds another layer to an already tense contest. Nigeria and South Africa have repeatedly met in decisive African women’s football fixtures, with the Super Falcons winning the 2024 WAFCON semi-final before going on to claim the title.

This time, however, there will be no trophy at stake. What awaits the winner is something potentially just as valuable: another step towards Brazil 2027.

Nigeria will look to captain Rasheedat Ajibade and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie for leadership, while South Africa will hope experienced attackers such as Kgatlana can trouble the Nigerian defence.

With both teams desperate to avoid missing the World Cup, the Casablanca encounter promises to be a battle of quality, experience and nerve. Only one of the African giants will keep its World Cup dream alive.
