The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has disclosed that more than 5,000 fibre-optic cable cuts were recorded across the country in the first six months of 2026, raising fresh concerns over the vulnerability of critical telecommunications infrastructure to road construction, excavation and other civil works. The commission said the incidents were disrupting telecommunications services, increasing the operating costs of network providers and exposing businesses, government institutions and other essential services to avoidable interruptions. The Central Bank of Nigeria has relaxed restrictions preventing banks participating in foreign exchange transactions and government securities auctions from accessing its Discount Window, as part of changes aimed at improving liquidity management and money market operations.
