Preparations are in full swing in Ijebu-Ode as anticipation grows for the annual Ojude Oba Festival, set to take place shortly after Eid al-Adha on May 27.
The festival, one of the most prominent cultural events in southwestern Nigeria, is renowned for its vibrant celebration of Yoruba heritage and its deep historical roots. Held in honor of the Awujale of Ijebuland, the event draws thousands of locals, tourists, and dignitaries each year.
A major highlight of the festival is the spectacular display of horsemanship, where richly adorned riders parade in front of the monarch in a show of prestige and tradition. Equally captivating is the colorful showcase by various “Regberegbe” (age-grade groups), who compete in elaborate fashion, coordinated attire, and cultural performances.
In the lead-up to this year’s edition, organisers and community leaders have intensified logistical planning to ensure a smooth and secure celebration. Local businesses, artisans, and hospitality providers are also gearing up for increased activity, as the festival is expected to boost tourism and economic engagement in the region.
Observers note that the Ojude Oba Festival continues to grow in global recognition, serving not only as a cultural spectacle but also as a platform for promoting unity, identity, and heritage among the Ijebu people and beyond.
