Nigeria Condemns Killing of Citizen in Durban, Urges Thorough ProbeThe Nigerian Consulate in South Africa has strongly condemned the killing of a Nigerian citizen in Durban, calling on South African law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident. The consulate described the killing as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing the need for justice and accountability.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Consulate General expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding the death, noting that it had formally taken up the matter with relevant South African authorities. The mission confirmed that it is engaging with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other stakeholders to ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted. According to the consulate, “The loss of a Nigerian life under violent circumstances is deeply troubling, and we demand a full, impartial investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
The consulate stated that preliminary information indicates the incident occurred in Durban, though investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact facts and motive behind the killing. It added that consular officials are in contact with the victim’s family and Nigerian community leaders in the area to provide necessary support and updates as developments unfold.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the protection of its citizens abroad, the consulate urged South African authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard foreign nationals and prevent a recurrence of such incidents. A consular official said, “We expect the South African authorities to act swiftly and decisively. The safety of Nigerians and other foreign nationals must be guaranteed at all times.”
The Nigerian mission also appealed for calm within the Nigerian community in South Africa, advising citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. It emphasized that diplomatic channels remain the most effective means of pursuing justice in the matter.
The killing has once again raised concerns over the safety of Nigerians living and working in South Africa, amid a history of violent incidents involving foreign nationals. The consulate assured that it will continue to monitor the investigation closely and keep the Nigerian government informed of all significant developments until the case is fully resolved.
