UN Chief Guterres Commends Nigeria’s Reforms, Says Country Positioned to Lead AfricaSecretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has described Nigeria as “uniquely positioned” to lead Africa toward greater global influence, commending the country’s ongoing economic and security reforms under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Guterres made the remarks while addressing discussions on Africa’s development prospects and the role of regional powers in driving economic transformation and security stability on the continent.
He said Nigeria possesses the demographic strength, economic potential and strategic influence required to play a leading role in shaping Africa’s future on the global stage.
“Nigeria is uniquely positioned to help lead Africa toward greater economic strength and global relevance,” the UN chief said. “With the right policies and sustained reforms, the country can become a powerful engine for development and stability across the continent.”
Guterres also commended the reform initiatives introduced by the current administration, noting that decisive policy actions are essential for long-term economic growth and national resilience.
“The reforms currently being pursued demonstrate a commitment to addressing structural challenges and unlocking the country’s vast economic potential,” he said.
The UN chief emphasised that strong governance, economic diversification and improved security cooperation would be key to sustaining Nigeria’s development trajectory.
Analysts say Nigeria’s large population, vast natural resources and expanding entrepreneurial sector place it in a strategic position to influence Africa’s economic direction if reforms are consistently implemented.
A policy expert familiar with the discussions said international institutions are increasingly paying attention to Nigeria’s reform agenda because of the country’s central role in West Africa and the wider continent.
“Nigeria remains one of the most influential economies in Africa, and its policy direction often shapes regional trends in governance, trade and development,” the analyst said.
Guterres further stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships between Nigeria and international institutions to address challenges related to climate change, security and sustainable development.
The UN chief said continued collaboration between Nigeria and the international community would be essential to achieving shared goals in economic growth, peacebuilding and social development across Africa.
