In celebration of International Literacy Day 2024, the Lagos Metropolitan Lions Club and Ikeja Lions Club has organized a charitable event at Anifowose Primary School on Friday.

The initiative included the distribution of free exercise books and stationery materials, as well as a tree-planting effort on the school premises.

The event aimed to improve educational resources for students, with 2,000 exercise books provided to pupils from kindergarten through primary six.

Also, over 3,000 various writing materials were given to teachers, along with two pairs of socks in collaboration with the “Back to School” initiative.

In addition to that, a medical team was brought in to check teachers’ blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and stress levels in supporting both students and educators.

Lion Victor Aylor, President of the Lagos Metropolitan Lions Club, explained the motivations behind the project.

“We conducted a needs assessment and found that many students at Anifowose Primary School lack basic writing materials. Some students do not even have socks and shoes, and even teachers are in need of stationery supplies,” he said.

He also noted the importance of improving the school’s environment, stating, “We recognized the necessity for trees in the area, leading us to engage in tree planting. Furthermore, we brought our medical team to check the blood sugar, blood pressure, and stress levels of the teachers, ensuring they also benefit from our outreach.”

The Charter President, Lion Franklin Udah, shared the underlying goal of the event.

“The reason for commemorating World Literacy Day is to encourage children to return to school for the new academic year. We want to make children happy,” he stated.
