Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has received continental recognition after being honoured as “Africa’s Outstanding Governor of the Year” at the 2026 Face of Africa Leadership Awards held in London.
The award was presented during a high-profile ceremony attended by political leaders, business executives, and members of the African diaspora, marking another milestone for the state’s leadership on the international stage.
According to the organisers, Governor Lawal was selected for his “remarkable milestone in service delivery,” with particular emphasis on his administration’s bold and urgent interventions in the education sector.
A major highlight of his reforms is the declaration of a state of emergency in education, a move aimed at reversing years of decline in Zamfara’s school system. This has led to significant actions, including the payment of over ₦3.4 billion in outstanding examination fees to enable students sit for national exams, as well as the rehabilitation and reconstruction of schools across the state.
These efforts have been credited with improving access to education and addressing the high rate of out-of-school children, while also contributing to broader goals such as reducing poverty and insecurity.
Beyond education, the recognition also reflects wider governance reforms introduced under his administration since assuming office in 2023. Despite inheriting financial challenges, his government has pursued policies focused on rebuilding critical sectors and restoring public confidence.
Observers say the honour is a major boost for Zamfara’s image, positioning the state more positively within Nigeria and across Africa, while also opening doors for potential partnerships and investments.
In his response, Governor Lawal dedicated the award to the people of Zamfara, describing it as a shared achievement and reaffirming his commitment to delivering meaningful development and sustained progress across the state.
