Akwa Ibom State is grappling with worsening electricity challenges as a combination of aging transmission infrastructure and increasing cases of vandalism continues to cripple power supply across the region.
Residents and businesses have reported frequent outages, voltage fluctuations, and prolonged blackouts, with many communities experiencing erratic electricity for weeks. The situation has placed additional strain on small businesses, hospitals, and households already contending with high energy costs.
Energy experts point to obsolete transmission lines and overstretched equipment as a major underlying issue. Much of the infrastructure serving the state is said to be decades old, making it vulnerable to breakdowns and unable to efficiently handle current demand levels. Minor technical faults often escalate into widespread outages due to the fragile state of the grid.
Compounding the problem is a surge in vandalism of critical power assets, including the theft of transmission cables, transformers, and other components. These attacks not only disrupt supply but also slow down repair efforts, as replacement materials are costly and not always readily available.
Officials in the power sector have acknowledged the challenges, noting that efforts are underway to upgrade transmission capacity and strengthen surveillance around key installations. However, progress has been gradual, with funding constraints and logistical hurdles slowing implementation.
Stakeholders are now calling for a multi-layered response, including:
Accelerated investment in grid modernization
Deployment of security technology to protect infrastructure
Stronger community engagement to deter vandalism
Expansion of alternative and decentralized energy solutions
The ongoing crisis highlights broader structural weaknesses in Nigeria’s power sector, where infrastructure deficits and security concerns continue to undermine reliable electricity delivery.
As pressure mounts, residents are urging both state and federal authorities to act swiftly, warning that sustained power instability could further impact economic activities and quality of life in Akwa Ibom.
