Ayra Starr

Nigerian Afrobeats singer and songwriter Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, also known as ‘Ayra Starr’, revealed on the Creatorium Podcast that she wrote her hit song “Beggie Beggie” during a random public bus ride home.

Speaking during a recent interview on the Creatorium podcast, the Mavin Records singer said she no longer relies on emotions before writing a song.

According to her, the process usually starts with testing ideas, whether through chords, sampled sounds, or creating something fresh and enjoyable.

She recalled that her first album featured a song titled ‘Beggie Beggie ‘, which she wrote while she was on a bus. According to her, the inspiration came after hearing a woman describe a passenger begging for money as “beggie beggie”.

Speaking about her career, the singer said success in music requires passion, dedication and discipline. She added that behind the glamour are long hours of work, intense rehearsals and difficult moments, noting that a single sound problem on stage can ruin weeks of preparation.

She also said, “It depends on what I am going for. Lately, for me, creating just starts with trying. Not emotion; just trying, then we see where it takes us. It may start with chords or sounds, or a specific sound I want to sample. Sometimes, I just want to do something fun or make something that sounds different”.

“You have to have a certain type of love and passion for what you do to be able to do this. The glamour is the glamour, but behind the scenes, it’s a lot of work. It’s a lot of preparation. It’s a lot of not-so-amazing days. Sometimes, after rehearsing for two weeks, one sound can ruin the whole performance on stage,” Starr concluded.
