Spyro says he got rebellious, selling recharge cards to make ends meet

Nigerian singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, says he once sold recharge cards to pay for his studio sessions because his father did not support his music career.

The ‘Only Fine Girl’ singer opened up about his past struggles in a recent episode of the TeaWithTay podcast.

Spyro said his father, a pastor, was “quite strict”, adding that he however “got rebellious” and had to sell recharge cards to afford the studio time.

“My father is quite strict, he is a pastor. You know the way pastors are with their kids, they are usually quite strict because they have this ideology that pastors children are usually the spoilt ones,” he said.

“My dad never wanted me to do music because I was a fine artist before, I drew so well. For one reason or the other, he stopped me from doing that, then I started doing music and he wanted to stop me from doing that.

“Then I got rebellious and was like no you took this other one from me, you would not be able to take this from me. I ventured into music from a young age and I was really good. I was in the choir and every choirmaster that they brought at that time was like this boy is very good.

“So it was quite interesting anytime I found myself in that space that music was being displayed. Anything that had to do with music, I just had that flair for it. So it was war because even after I finished secondary school, I started making stops at the studio.

“Then I was selling recharge cards to make ends meet because I had to make ends meet even though I had parents that were feeding me, but nobody sends you after you have finished school. I also liked having the lifestyle, so I had to hustle to pay for my lifestyle and book studio time.”
