Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling cancer.

His daughter, Kira Taiwo, confirmed his death on Sunday during a live video. She broke down in tears and repeatedly said, “My daddy is dead.”

The confirmation came five days after the family had dismissed an earlier report of his death.

Here are few things to know about him:

1. Born in Ogun State

Taiwo Hassan was born on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State. He later moved to Lagos, where he continued his education and started building his career.

2. Popularly called Ogogo

Although his real name was Taiwo Hassan, he became widely known as Ogogo. The name became closely linked to his acting career, especially among lovers of Yoruba films.

3. Once an automobile mechanic

Before becoming a full-time actor, Ogogo trained and worked as an automobile mechanic. He also worked with the Lagos State Water Corporation for about 13 years.

4. Started acting in 1981

Ogogo began his acting career in 1981 while still working as a mechanic. He later became one of the well-known actors in the Yoruba film industry.

5. Left government job in 1994

After combining his government job with acting for several years, Ogogo resigned from his job in 1994 to focus fully on entertainment.

6. Worked beyond acting

Ogogo was also a producer, director and screenwriter. He contributed to many film productions both in front of and behind the camera.

7. Appeared in many popular films

Some of his notable films include Owo Blow, Agbelebu, Omo Ghetto, Omin, Tenant of the House, Bank Alert and Aníkúlápó.

8. Gained a new generation of fans through ‘Aníkúlápó’

His role in Kunle Afolayan’s Aníkúlápó introduced him to many younger viewers. The Netflix movie was released in 2022 and received several award nominations.

9. Spoke about his family’s history of twins

Ogogo revealed that his mother gave birth to four sets of twins and that he was the only surviving child.

Days before his death, his daughters revealed that he was battling stage-four cancer. They appealed to medical experts and hospitals for help with his treatment.

Several Nollywood actors also held a special prayer session for him as concern grew over his health.

Ogogo died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, leaving behind a career that lasted more than four decades and a lasting impact on Yoruba cinema.
