The Lagos State Government has appealed to private businesses such as banks, filling stations, eateries, and other public facilities to allow members of the public to use their restrooms as part of efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve sanitation across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the appeal in a post on X, noting that collaboration with the private sector is necessary to complement government efforts in expanding access to sanitation facilities.
He stated that the state currently has about 1,710 functional public toilets located across different parts of Lagos, but stressed that government alone cannot meet the growing demand.
According to him, allowing public access to restrooms in private establishments, where possible, would significantly improve hygiene standards and reduce environmental pollution.
He also emphasized that the state government is enforcing environmental sanitation laws, including the arrest and prosecution of individuals caught engaging in open defecation.
Wahab said the initiative is aimed at protecting public health, preserving dignity, and ensuring a cleaner and more habitable environment, while calling on residents and business owners to support the effort as a shared responsibility.
