Nigeria has officially commenced its 2026 Hajj operations, with Vice President Kashim Shettima flagging off the inaugural flight at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
The first batch of 500 pilgrims from Kogi State departed for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, marking the beginning of what authorities describe as a large-scale, coordinated airlift of approximately 50,000 Nigerian pilgrims for this year’s pilgrimage.
Speaking during the ceremony, Shettima emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth, safe, and spiritually fulfilling journey for all participants. He noted that extensive logistical arrangements had been put in place in collaboration with aviation authorities, state pilgrims’ boards, and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to avoid the delays and challenges experienced in previous years.
The Vice President urged the pilgrims to be good ambassadors of Nigeria, adhere strictly to Saudi Arabian laws, and conduct themselves with discipline and dignity throughout the pilgrimage. He also commended the efforts of officials and service providers involved in the planning and execution of the exercise.
Officials of NAHCON confirmed that the airlift would be carried out in phases across multiple states, with designated airlines operating scheduled flights over the coming weeks. Adequate welfare provisions, including accommodation, feeding, and medical support, have been arranged in Saudi Arabia to cater to the needs of the pilgrims.
The annual Hajj pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam, draws millions of Muslims from around the world to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Nigeria remains one of the largest contributors of pilgrims from Africa, making the operation a significant logistical and administrative undertaking for the country.
