President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended Nigerian energy expert Damilola Ogunbiyi for becoming the first Nigerian to be honoured with the TIME Earth Awards, describing the recognition as a proud moment for the country and a testament to her contributions to global sustainable development.
In a statement issued by the Presidency, Tinubu praised Ogunbiyi’s leadership in advancing clean energy access and her sustained efforts in driving the global transition towards renewable power, particularly in underserved and energy-poor communities. He noted that her work continues to place Nigeria at the forefront of international conversations on sustainability and climate action.
The President said, “This honour is well deserved and reflects your unwavering commitment to expanding access to sustainable energy for millions of people across the world. You have not only made Nigeria proud but have also demonstrated the impact of visionary leadership in addressing some of the most pressing global challenges.”
Ogunbiyi, who has played a key role in international energy initiatives, was recognised for her efforts in promoting affordable and reliable electricity solutions, especially in developing regions where energy poverty remains a major constraint to economic growth and quality of life.
Tinubu further stated, “Your achievement underscores the importance of innovation, collaboration, and resilience in tackling climate change and energy inequality. It is a source of inspiration to young Nigerians who aspire to make meaningful contributions on the global stage.”
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting policies and partnerships that promote sustainable energy development, noting that Nigeria remains focused on expanding access to clean power while balancing economic growth and environmental responsibility.
The recognition by TIME is regarded as one of the prominent global honours celebrating individuals making significant contributions to environmental sustainability and climate solutions. Observers say Ogunbiyi’s selection reflects her growing influence in shaping global energy policy and advancing inclusive energy access.
Ogunbiyi’s achievement marks a milestone for Nigeria in the global sustainability space, reinforcing the country’s presence in international efforts aimed at addressing climate change and accelerating the transition to cleaner energy systems.
