Airbnb has announced a major expansion of its platform, introducing new services that go beyond short-term home rentals as it responds to growing regulatory pressure in several countries.
The company said it will now include boutique and independent hotel listings, car rental services, airport and train transfers, luggage storage, and grocery delivery in its app, aiming to position itself as a comprehensive travel platform. In some US cities, grocery delivery will be powered through Instacart, while other services will be available across multiple global locations.
The move comes as Airbnb, Inc. faces stricter restrictions on short-term rentals in major markets. Countries and cities such as Spain, Barcelona, New York, and Paris have tightened rules or imposed penalties on non-compliant listings, significantly affecting the company’s core business model.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said the goal is to make travel more seamless and meaningful, noting that not all trips are suited to home rentals, especially short stays or last-minute bookings. He also emphasized that many independent hotels worldwide could benefit from partnering with the platform to better compete with large hotel chains.
The updated app will also integrate new artificial intelligence features, including a multilingual virtual support assistant designed to improve customer service.
Financially, Airbnb reported revenue of $2.68 billion in the first quarter of 2026, reflecting an 18% increase compared to the previous year, even as the company continues adapting its business strategy in response to global regulatory challenges.
