Tunde Onakoya meets Prof. Wole Soyinka, discussion
Tunde Onakoya and Wole Soyinka
Renowned Nigerian chess coach and Guinness World Record holder, Tunde Onakoya, has shared a heartfelt moment from his recent meeting with one of his lifelong inspirations—Nobel Laureate and literary icon, Professor Wole Soyinka.
Taking to Instagram on Monday, Onakoya posted photos of their encounter and reflected on the significance of the meeting.
“Met one of my heroes today—Professor Wole Soyinka. Nobel Laureate, literary giant, and undoubtedly one of the greatest Nigerians to ever walk this earth,” he wrote. “Our brief exchange was as profound as it was lighthearted.”
During their conversation, Onakoya revealed that he tried to tempt the professor into a game of chess. Soyinka, known to be a former enthusiast of the game, graciously declined.
“Me: ‘I hear you’re an avid chess player, sir?’
Prof. Wole Soyinka (with a knowing smile): ‘Yes… but I had to stop myself. There isn’t enough time in the world for chess.’”
Onakoya then asked if Soyinka would consider one final game. The professor declined again, but extended a warm offer instead—to attend a future event and watch Onakoya play.
“This is one picture I’ll definitely be framing,” Onakoya concluded.
