Nigeria LNG (NLNG) Limited has announced a significant rebranding of its annual awards, marking a major expansion of its corporate social responsibility initiatives in the arts. Central to this “award evolution” is the official debut of the Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts in 2026, a new category designed to sit alongside the established prizes for Literature and Science. For its inaugural cycle, the prize will specifically target the film industry, with a focus on documentary filmmaking under the thematic umbrella of “Identity.”

The introduction of the new prize reflects a strategic shift by the organizers to encompass a broader spectrum of the creative economy. By selecting documentary filmmaking as the debut focus, NLNG aims to provide a platform for non-fiction storytellers to explore the complex social and cultural nuances of the Nigerian experience. The designated theme, “Identity,” is intended to encourage filmmakers to produce works that examine the historical, personal, and collective narratives that define the nation in a contemporary context.

Industry stakeholders have noted that the inclusion of a $100,000 purse—consistent with the prize’s other categories—positions the Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts as one of the most significant financial endowments for filmmakers on the continent. As the 2026 cycle commences, the rebranding effort is expected to heighten competition and elevate the technical standards of local documentary production. Further details regarding the judging panel and submission criteria are expected to be released following the formal launch event later this month.
