The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the immediate trial of officers implicated in a viral video showing the extortion of civilians using Point-of-Sale (PoS) machines in Delta State, in a move aimed at reinforcing discipline and restoring public trust.
The directive followed widespread outrage on social media after footage surfaced showing uniformed officers allegedly forcing individuals to transfer money through PoS terminals under duress. The video, which quickly gained traction online, sparked condemnation from citizens and civil society groups, many of whom described the act as a blatant abuse of power and a troubling evolution of street-level extortion tactics.
In response, police authorities confirmed that the officers involved have been identified and detained, with internal disciplinary procedures already underway. The Force emphasized that such conduct violates its code of ethics and assured the public that those found guilty would face strict sanctions, including possible dismissal and criminal prosecution.
Senior police officials reiterated that the use of PoS machines or any digital payment method to extort money is illegal and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. They also encouraged members of the public to report similar incidents, noting that accountability mechanisms are being strengthened to address misconduct within the ranks.
The incident has once again drawn attention to persistent concerns about police behavior in Nigeria, particularly regarding extortion and harassment at checkpoints and during routine patrols. Advocacy groups have called for more systemic reforms, including better training, improved welfare for officers, and the deployment of technology to monitor field activities.
Authorities say the trial process will be transparent, and updates will be communicated to the public as proceedings progress.
